Fracture and Fatigue

The mission of the Fracture and Fatigue Division is to advance the state of knowledge in the areas of fracture mechanics and fatigue through the timely sharing of research results. The division meets each year at the SEM Annual Conference. Every fourth year the SEM Annual Conference is also the SEM International Congress. (Other conferences are also sponsored by SEM). Our work on fracture and fatigue overlaps with the efforts of other divisions resulting in a cooperative effort between researchers from different areas of experimental mechanics.

Fracture and Fatigue Division - Updated May 2010

The goal of the Fracture and Fatigue Division is to promote and support within SEM issues that deal not only with fracture and fatigue of materials, but also failure, damage evolution, novel materials and the influence of microstructure on failure phenomena. Activities include organizing sessions, symposia, short courses, and reports and publications on these topics.

The division met during the 2009 SEM summer meeting and discussed the previous and upcoming activities. During 2008–2009 the division had several activities, some of which are still ongoing:

  • Several session topics were discussed and proposed for the 2010 meeting.
  • Fatigue and Fracture: Then and Now (Raman)
  • Full-Field Methods in Fatigue and Fracture (Raman, Sam. Potentially put into imaging track)
  • Degradation and Fracture of Composites for Energy Applications (Matt and Gajendra)
  • X-Ray Methods for Damage Assessment (potentially put into imaging track)
  • Fracture and Failure of Bio-Materials (Jay)
  • Residual Stress and Fatigue (Jay and Paulo Coelho)

The specific symposia organized for the 2010 meeting was, “Session 094:  Fatigue and Fracture in Biological Materials,” in addition to the sessions through the general call for papers.

2. The bylaws of the TD are still pending revision. They were not revised in 2008–09. This issue will be revisited at the 2010 meeting.

3. The TD continues to show moderate activity, but not as high as desired. Further integration with other TDs was suggested and will be revisited at the 2010 meeting.
