Applications Committee

The purpose of the committee is to assure a forum is provided for those individuals in the field of Experimental Mechanics doing the work on a more practical level than pure research.  These are individuals who need as well as provide answers and techniques that are basic and not once removed from the problem solution.

Applications Committee: Updated May 2011

Applications Committee Meeting, June 6, 2010

We talked about three different activities to contribute to the 2011 SEM Annual Meeting

1 – Student-Employer Reception

We propose an evening reception during which potential employers could meet students looking for jobs.  The participants could include those looking for post-doctoral positions and those looking for positions in Government.

The event could be preceded by a short panel discussion covering skills potential employers would like to see and technical topics they would like to see people work on.

Paul Gloeckner has agreed to help develop this activity.  I talked after the meeting with Joni Normandin and she has agreed to assist.

2 – Applications Sessions with Vendors

This is an extension of the session held at the 2010 Annual Meeting.  The session was well-attended this year.  This event may be developed in conjunction with the Educational Committee.

3 – Pre-Conference Courses

We propose offering two pre-conference courses, one on Basic Dynamic Testing and Strain Gauge Data Analysis and one on Linking Test and Analysis.

Paul Gloeckner has offered to assist with the Strain Gauge Data Analysis portion of the first course.  We are seeking help with the rest of the events.

While making this report at the TAC meeting, Tom Proulx asked whether we planned to charge a registration fee for either class.  This was not discussed at the Applications Committee meeting, but needs to be addressed.  Tom said that space could be made available at no cost to the course organizers.  Cost will be determined by whether the instructors are to be paid and by the cost of course materials.
